The Ministry of Magic is the governmental authority of the for the wizarding world in Britain. The basic mission of the Ministry is to keep the Muggles from finding out about an entire culture of magical folk. It's a huge, complicated, and inefficient bureaucracy, just like most governmental organizations.

Departments[]

Department of Magical Law Enforcement[]

All members of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement are issued with a Ministry Broom, and fully comprehensive medical coverage.

Magical Law Enforcement Squad

  • Investigator/Officer: Being an Officer in the Magical Law Enforcement Squad is the first step in furthering one's career in Law Enforcement, training includes a six month intensive course, followed by a further year of training while within the Division. Potential members must pass numerous tests that cover their magical ability, physical ability as well as ensuring that they are of sound mind to be able to cope with the pressures that may potentially be encountered in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Auror Division

  • Aurors: It takes an additional three years of training after leaving Hogwarts to become an Auror. Candidates for Auror training must pass a criminal background check as well as a series of further practical and psychological tests to assess physical ability and capacity to handle stress. Auror's are usually solitary workers, they're ability to survive within the field with limited contact is essential, as well as their ability to become anonymous in a crowd, they have excellent intelligence gather capabilities and are able to analyse it thoroughly. Hit Wizard Division

  • Hit Wizards:The Hit Wizards are the utility Division of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, they are capable of working with the Magical Law Enforcement Squad, Aurors, as well as a standalone entity. Hit Wizards are extremely fine tuned wizards/witches that are capable of removing a threat from an area with precise and unequaled ferocity, Hit Wizards work as closely as a group to achieve their objective. Hit Wizards are capable of adapting to any situation that they are in, their knowledge of offensive and defensive dueling techniques is unparalleled within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Wizengamot & Wizengamot Administration Services

  • Chief Warlock: The Chief Warlock is the head of the Wizengamot. He presides over only those hearings which affect all of the wizarding world and intervenes only when a tie-breaking vote is required. The Chief Warlock does have the option of calling for additional witnesses or requesting a second vote if he/she is not pleased with the outcome of a trial.
  • Elders: The Elders are members of the Wizengamot who hear the evidence and testimony presented at trials and then vote on the outcome.
  • Barristers: Advocates cases in court before Elder or Coucil of Elders
  • Solicitor: Solicitors are lawyers who traditionally deal with any legal matter apart from conducting proceedings in courts such as writing and reviewing contracts, wills, divorces, property law, litigation, personal injury, criminal law (outside of court appearances)
  • Legal Apprentice: Entry-level, constant training and education during this period. All Legal Apprentice start this phase of their training at the Ministry of Magic, whether they continue with the Ministry or move into private practice. Every person practicing law trained as a Legal Apprentice at the Ministry first in order to receive a license that would allow them to represent the next level of legal training. Once they pass a written and oral examination, three mock-trials and passed review, they may apply for Solicitor, Solicitor Advocate or Barrister positions at the Ministry or a private firm. Each position has a separate entrance examination that deals with its specific area of law practice.
  • Department Head/Court Scribe: Managerial and administrative role

Improper Use of Magic Office

  • Investigators: The investigators of the Improper Use of Magic office have two primary functions. They oversee all incoming reports of underaged magic which are reported throughout Britain and send out the appropriate warning letters. These investigators also send keep an eye on magic which is performed in the presence of muggles, a serious offense which can warrant action by other departments including the Wizengamot.

Misuse of Muggle Artefacts

  • Investigators: Investigators for this office are called up to investigate and confiscate charmed and enchanted muggle items to keep them out of the hands of unsuspecting muggles. This department may be required to work closely with other areas of the Magical Law Enforcement department.
  • Officers: Officers of this division assist the Investigators in their work and are also called up to participate in raids to keep Dark Items out of the hands of both muggles and magical persons. This department may be required to work closely with other areas of the Magical Law Enforcement department.

Committee on Experimental Charms

  • Researcher: These researchers are called upon to examine the use and practicality of various new charms that are introduced into the wizarding world. At times, they may be called upon to invent new charms for a specific department of the Ministry. This is a high risk job which requires an expertise in all areas of charms work.

   

Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes[]

Accidental Magic Reversal Squad

  • Investigator: The investigator in this department must have excelled in nearly every discipline of study as the ability to produce a strong shield and create counter charms in the field are a must. Heavy travel is seen with this position as investigators personally examine and possibly reverse all aspects of accidental magic. Since these instances are often caused by younger wizards without control or older wizards who have lost control, a good sense of humor and the ability to be diplomatic are highly helpful traits.

Invisibility Task Force

  • Researcher: The Invisibility Task Force has the job of hiding magical places, creatures, and large objects from Muggle eyes. The research team spends countless hours investigating new spells and charms to make magical things invisible to anyone who is not a witch or a wizard, although it has been ruled that allowing Squibs to see these places is acceptable.
  • Officer: The officers of this department are the ones who go out into the field to apply the charms and wards which make magical places and creatures invisible to Muggles. These officers must be exceptional at charm work and also able to dress as muggles without drawing attention to themselves.

Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee

  • Committee Member: This committee must be experts on both the muggle and the magical world as they develop new reasons to convince muggles that they haven't seen magic.

Obliviator Headquarters

  • Obliviator: The Oblivators work to erase selected memories of Muggles who have seen magical things which they shouldn't see. The Oblivators also work under very strict supervision to erase selected memories of magical persons under specific circumstances. Potential obliviators must also pass a criminal, background check before being accepted to the office for training.

   

Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures[]

  • Spirit Hunter/Handler: These people go out into the field to look for rogue spirits who have taken up residence in unauthorized places. They may also be required to work with other departments, including the Department of Magical Actions and Catasptrophes if muggles are involved in any sightings.
  • Beast Control Officer: These officers are in charge of regulating all magical creatures deemed non-wizard/non-witch by the Ministry. The ability to dress as a muggle and work well under stress are two requirements of this position. They may also be required to work with other departments, including the Department of Magical Actions and Catasptrophes if muggles are involved in any sightings.

   

Department of International Magical Cooperation[]

International Confederation of Wizards, British Seats

  • Representatives: These select members of the British wizarding committee work with wizards from around the world to discuss the rules and laws necessary for everyone to peacefully coexist. Diplomatic ability and a calm head are musts for this senior position, as a wrong word or a misplaced spell could cause international chaos when the International Confederation meets three times each year. In the event that the Triwizard tournament is held, the members also coordinate with the schools of other countries as the British Department of Magical Games and Sports to make sure the tournament is as safe as possible for all participants and observers.

International Magical Office of Law

  • Liason Officers: After first being trained in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, these officers assist the law enforcement teams of other countries in the tracking and collection of evidence for conviction of international magical law breakers. They also assist in the extradition of foreign wizards and witches to their home countries to stand trial if an arrest warrant exists.

International Magical Trading Standards Body

  • Assistants: These assistants research and compile the vast body of regulations which set international standards for trade and commerce between countries.
  • Junior Assistants: Junior assistants are selected for their ability to work long hours with little pay while examining such details as the thickness of cauldron bottoms from various countries and suppliers.

Wizarding Examinations Authority

  • Examiners: These examiners travel to Hogwarts every June to oversee the administration of OWLS and NEWTS. They are also responsible for the creation of new exams and practical skills tests for these tests.

   

Department of Magical Transportation[]

Portkey Office

  • Administrator: These people must be able to accurately perform the complex charm which creates an accurate, reliable, and dependable portkey. This department is also responsible for the inspection and certification of existing portkeys available for public use (such as those used by travel agencies) as well as the investigation of the establishment of unauthorized portkeys.

Floo Network Authority

  • Administrator: This department maintains the safety and stability of the Floo Network throughout Britain. Regular travel is required to inspect Floo routes, and 24 hour on-call status is possible in the event of a major breakdown in the network. The ability to use charms under pressure is required as well as being certified to having no existing soot allergies.

Department of Magical Games and Sports[]

British and Irish Quidditch League Headquarters

  • Officers: The officers of this department organize matches, book venues, and make sure that all profesional quiddtch activities held in Great Britain comfom to international standards. They also supervise the enforcement of quidditch standards (heights of goals, weights of balls, action of broomsticks) as well as try to promote the sport to the wizarding public.
  • Quidditch Officials: The Quidditch official is the one who actually attends the matches to act as a referee. This person must know the rules of the game backward and forward, be a superb flyer, and sign a waiver to release the department of all liability in the event of an accident during a match. The official also makes sure that all balls and broomsticks meet specifications before a match as well as checking for hidden weights or charms which might affect the other team's performance.

Offical Gobstones Club

  • Administrator: The Administrator of this department leads a hectic life. In addition to promoting the game of gobstones, he also attends local tournaments and helps in the formation and early development of new gobstones clubs.

Ludicrous Patents Office

  • Administrator: The Administrator of this office must enjoy travel and be highly trained in charms as they examine new wizarding devices which are applying for patent protection outside the normal channels of the Ministry.

Quidditch Rules and Regulations Office

  • Officials: Officials of this department travel all over Great Britain to observe Quidditch games and make sure that the sport is being played by the rules. All appeals on referee calls come to this department, as well as all suggestions for new rules and standards for the sport.

   

Department of Mysteries[]

  • Unspeakables: The Unspeakables research the very fabric of magic and its relationship to everything which exists. To become an Unspeakable requires extreme dedication and excellent marks as well as the ability to keep secrets. The Unspeakables investigate and experiment with different magical forces in the Department of Mysteries chambers.
